Remedial Rocket Science by Susannah Nix
5.0
I was excited to read this book. So excited that I downloaded it the moment it became free (living on a student budget is annoying when you are a bookworm).
The first thing that was positive was the cover. I'm a bit fed up with seeing shirtless men on the cover of romance novels (for a rant on this look elsewhere on the blog). Even looking at the book makes you feel cosy which is why I recommend buying the paperback for this one.
As a science student, I kept on searching for ways to identify with the protagonist. She doesn't give herself enough credit. Melody lacked all the character traits that I hated in Bridget Jones. She is insecure but not to the point where you want to shout at her. But even though that's not how Melody sees herself, she is the strong independent woman we all want to be.
Jeremy it the kind of character I just don't care about but that doesn't matter because to me the story seems to be more about Melody than about him. What makes less likeable for me is that he cheats. I just have an internal inability to like anyone who cheats unless that have the Mr Rochester excuse of not being able to get divorced from an insane woman. Jeremy could have easily been the cliché cocky billionaire playboy but he isn't. Instead he is likeable.
One thing a lot of romance authors do wrong is making the girlfriend of the male main character unlikable but I like Lacey. She's a good character. When she broke up with Jeremy (I won't spoil why) my first thought was 'You go girl!'
The way Melody and Jeremy interact with each other is perfect. There are little subtleties and things aren't going too fast or too slow. In conclusion, I can only recommend this book.
