This book starts off a new series in a great way, full of intense fighting scenes and personal drama exactly how I like it.
First I want to say that this book had exactly the right amount of telling things up front and keeping things back for a later (better) moment. I never felt like I was guessing what was going on, but it also wasn't that I knew everything and new bits were revealed throughout the novella. This went very organically through Wren who didn't know the history Lark and Nightingale had.
Nightingale as a character was such a joy to see on page. She was a perfect chaotic villain that delighted in the chaos she created. It never felt like random chaos though and it was very clear she always had a reason and plan for what she did. Lark trying to catch her was like a wild chase after someone who is within reach but feels so uncatchable.
The chaos of Nightingale was also very reflected in their interactions with Lark. There was so much going on and Lark was out of control of themselves, and while Nightingale played with them we see the drama it causes.
Lark and Wren also was a very fun duo to follow as the reader. They seemed like great friends who cared for each other, even though at times it was clear they didn't know everything of each's life.
Wren shows that she's such a dependable friend that just wanted to make sure Lark is alright and safe. It is clear though that as long as Nightingale is out and about that won't happen and it gives Lark a lot of stress, and it made for a great story. I'm excited to see how this continues.
I received an eARC of this book and this was my honest review.
