A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid

4.5

“He had loved nothing more than the truth, and she had loved nothing more than her imagined world. Somehow, in spite of that, they had found each other.”

I bought this book without a knowledge of the world of what it would be about.
I love it and enjoy it, and the simplicity of the writing brings out the unique beauty of the world and the characters.

As it is a spin-off of Welsh folklore - I knew nothing about it, but Ava Reid did a good job of giving us an idea of it.
The writing was mythical, fairytale-like way, which got me so intrigued.
It gives a combination vibe of old fairytale folklore + modern society world.

I love the parallel of the world that introduces the little life of the two main characters, Effy and Preston. The mix of genres of goth, thriller and fantasy was well told.

“I wanted you, too. For so long. It was terrible. Sometimes I could barely eat- sorry, I know that sounds like the strangest thing. But for days I didn't feel hungry at all. I was... occupied. You took away all the other wanting from me.”
