DNF. I usually adore Rebecca Makkai's writing, but I could tell from the first 50 pages that this would be a tell-not-show novel that, rather than tackling some very important issues (racial bias, misogyny in murder & true crime reporting alike) throws this aside for the comfort of unnecessary details about shallow characters.
