Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare

5.0

This book was immaculate.
Cassandra Clare has an extraordinary ability to make you love and hate characters all at once, for your heart to be completely torn by the choices and decisions they have to face.
Since reading the Infernal Devices, I have come to love the setting and the characters much more than the Mortal Instruments. There is something so perfect about the exploration of demons and angels in a Victorian London backdrop.
The plot was well driven and the story only took place over two weeks but it was paced really well. Magnus Bane is always such a good addition to Shadowhunter books and added a good amount of humour. We had time to explore the character dynamics and development and the pros of people's feelings were done so well.
This had to be my favourite Shadowhunter book so far and I am looking forward to reading the Chain of Gold when I get around to it.
Also, many people have asked me if you can start with the Infernal Devices instead of the Mortal Instruments and I think definitely! At the start of Clockwork Angel, Tessa starts to read the Shadowhunter Codex and everything that happens Nephilim related further on - Tessa explains to herself with what she has read. As much as I don't love the Mortal Instrument, they do give a really good background and overall theme to the Shadowhunter Chronicles, so might be worth a read if you like the Infernal Devices and I suppose the Dark Artifices. However, if you like reading different series in different timelines for the little easter eggs I would recommend reading all the books in chronilogical order of publication date. After reading Clockwork Angel, City of Fallen Angels had references to Vampires we had met previously and of course Will Herondale. This extra knowledge you have from reading the books previously is nice however I think it is up to you!
I love Will Herondale, Jem Carstairs and Tessa Gray with all of my heart :)
