I read all of the Goodreads Awards winners of the last 10 years in the Debut category. This was the 2013 winner. To hear all my thoughts, check out this video.
This was terrible. We are firmly in the first person narration of a chauvinistic pig who barely views women as people. He tells us all his misogynistic bs about how he uses and abuses women, but it's supposed to be okay because he finds one (1) woman he finds tolerable and has to beg her to date him, or whatever, though that does come after what would count as sexual harassment in 100% of workplaces. And this one (1) woman he finds tolerable (because not even the main character's sister counts) teaches him that huh maybe he does want a woman in his life for longer than one night or something like that. We also supposed to find it all funny and charming and supposed to believe this man has a soft side because he treats one (1) child well.
By the end, we see no actual proof of this man changing. He just is a misogynist that gets the girl and that's the happily ever after. Why did this win for best debut in 2013? I have absolutely 0 explanations.
I wish I could unread this.
