The Final Revival of Opal & Nev by Dawnie Walton
5.0
This book is Daisy Jones and the Six, but with more commentary on race and what’s out in the world. It follows interviews surrounding the breakout of Opal Jewel and Nev Charles, a punk rock band, that rose to the heights after a riot broke out at one of their shows killing a black man. The interview style gives you the feeling as a reader that you remain on the outside of the story (which you do), but it’s easy to feel like you’re inside the story with all the characters at the same time. I was halfway through the book and changed my ratings of Daisy Jones and the Six because I realized it was missing some things that ultimately made me like this book better. I felt that Daisy Jones was a great ride full of fun, real characters and music and drugs and very 60s —I am still very excited to see it adapted into a mini series. However, I felt that it didn’t have anything different regarding the story of a rock band set in that time aka it was a story we’ve all heard before. It also didn’t have much representation. I feel like Opal and Nev was a story we’ve heard before regarding race and racism (not in a bad way - just meaning it was prevalent then and still is now), but also a story that’s set up so uniquely by the author in this interview styled writing. I was enraptured the entire time and couldn’t put it down. If you liked Daisy Jones, you will like this book, possibly even more. It’s grittier and tough to chew regarding some topics, but in a nitty-gritty way of punk rock and brings up necessary conversations. Would very much recommend reading both side by side to experience the white and black experiences of rock bands in the 60s-80s.
