Servant of Earth by Sarah Hawley

My heart spoke for me without any input from my mind. To be loved. To be touched. To be free. I yearned for it with every piece of me, the desire as strong as any hunger or thirst I’d ever felt.

Servant of Earth is a NA Fae fantasy romance centered on deadly trials and secret rebellions, and the story is narrated by a human whose own circumstances led her to be appointed as a handmaiden to a Fae noble. Her main purpose is to support her mistress as she undertakes the trials which grant the Fae immortality and unlimited access to their power.

I was quite intrigued by the premise and I appreciate the rich world-building, however I just could not connect with the heroine and the plot wasn't as exciting except towards the end. It's like a combination of ACOTAR, the Cruel Prince, and the Hunger Games (sort of).

The ending has me reconsidering picking up the next book, I think it still has potential to win me over.

I will say couldn't have the author pick a different name for the monsters? Not to sound mean but "The Nasties" sound like a nickname for a mean girls clique.

It does have quite brutal and dark scenes, so don't pick this up thinking it's YA.

Content warning: Servant of Earth deals with emotionally difficult topics, including violence, murder, torture, gore, sexual assault (secondary characters), sexual harassment, self-harm, death of a parent after prolonged illness, grief, explicit sexual content, and explicit language.
