I mean, what can we say: Anne continues to Anne. 2Anne 2Furious. She stays silly and that is her charm!

Not quite as striking or memorable as book 1, but book 2 still has all its fun elements—richly and comedically sketched side characters, humorous hijinks, high stakes cottagecore, optimistic pathos, and descriptions of nature so deliciously, lushly purple you want to bite into them like a... juicy bunch of grapes, or something. (Drink every time you read the word "twilight" to experience your own "Diana And The Raspberry Cordial Incident" incident.) I wasn't a fan of the Dora and Davy bits, which felt like they were there due to insecurity on Aunt Maud's part that readers would continue to care about her heroine now that she's no longer a wacky child. She shouldn't have worried—I much preferred reading about Anne's struggles as a schoolteacher not much older than her pupils and overflowing with romantic hippie ideals of Teacherhood. What other author can write a chapter that’s just “What if my characters went on a picnic and had a really nice time” and we all nod along like "Yes queen tell us more about the sandwiches they ate. Were they good sandwiches??" 🤩

I was also very 👀 about all the elements of setup for book 3. Congratulations to Rachel and Marilla, whom literary history will know as gal pals. Oh my god they were roommates
