A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
5.0
⠀⠀✧ • ° . ◦ *⠀┊ five stars
⠀oh. my. god. i have no words. i am speechless. w o w. let me just preface this by saying i tried to read this a year ago. i got about 60 pages in to this before i gave up. in fact, i dreaded picking this book up. it put me in a reading slump. why did i even keep it? who knows. i probably shouldn't have given what i've said about it. however, the 2020 owl's magical readathon came around and i needed a book that included shapeshifting. with quarantine, i only had access to about three physical shapeshifting books. something kept drawing me to this book despite my lack of enjoyment the first time around. let me tell you... i am so glad i never unhauled this. i am so glad i picked this up again. there is no question that this a 5 star read.
⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀and here’s why. . .
⠀⠀⠀⠀❥ ┊ i will be the first to admit, this started out fairly slow. it wasn't terribly slow but i think this played a part in the failed first read of this. since i knew what to expect the second time around, i was more open to the slowness and gradual introduction of this world. for what it's worth, this is really my only complaint and i can't bring myself to dock even a quarter of a star from this.
⠀⠀⠀⠀❥ ┊ the narrative was incredibly intriguing. it is clear that this is a beauty and the beast retelling. comparing this story to that classic tale kind of blows my mind. the inspiration is there, but sarah j. maas really made this her own. i won't go into too much detail because of spoilers, but the way the tales blight and curse were handled... chefs kiss. i found the war and the feelings and actions that came with the war very interesting. i honestly didn't see that coming... just like i predict 99% of this.
⠀⠀⠀⠀❥ ┊ our characters were just as enchanting. i'm not going to lie, i used quite a few of my orange sticky tabs on feyre in the beginning. this translates into: i was often annoyed by her. but even as the story continued and i still found her kind of annoying... i cared and i felt for her. it will be hard for me to talk about most of the fae without giving too many spoilers, so let me sum it up really quickly. i found the general fae extremely fascinating. i want to learn more about the types of fae. the high fae characters that we meet... whew boy. i thought i was in love with our main man, tamlin, but then daddy rhysland came along.
⠀⠀⠀⠀❥ ┊ the romance was intoxicating. i'm pretty easy to please when it comes to romance. if it's written well, i'm going to eat that shit up like cake (lol). this was no exception. i liked that there was just enough angst for this story. i'm not going to speak on too much more because i do know what happens later in the series, but the love storyline in this was pretty god tier.
