The Conquest of Bread by Peter Kropotkin

3.0

The broad points are clear and well-made, but the book is way too long and gets bogged down in unnecessary detail and endless examples; some of these are illustrative and useful, but many are simply outdated and restating points already made.

There is also a sort of naive optimism about the imminent revolution that we, here in the future, know did not happen, and the direction that scientific and technological advancements would take.

Kropotkin also had a few obvious blind spots, such as in the chapter on housework, in which he (correctly) points out that women are exploited in having to do the majority, but his solution to this is that women still do the housework and childcare but that it be made less arduous by the provision of labour-saving machines.

Still, although it lacks the brevity and readability of The Communist Manifesto, it is worth reading as it goes into more detail and expands on many points.
