The Spanish Love Deception by Elena Armas

5.0

This book has every single good romance trope all rolled into one and I love it: Enemies to lovers, office romance, fake relationship, one bed, oh my!

You definitely feel the influence of The Hating Game on the author. The vibes are certainly there, but I actually think Armas does a little bit better of a job fleshing out the main characters and providing better secondary characters to round out the story. I really loved Catalina Martín, and while yes she was a little oblivious at times and probably should have figured out that Aaron had feelings for her much sooner it didn't really bother me that much. It's just a minor flaw (?) that you will probably notice, but at the end of the day doesn't take away from the book's worth. And Aaron....my god....he's the kind of character that makes you feel depressingly single, or if you have a partner, get unfairly annoyed at them for not living up to his perfection.

For a debut book, it's really impressive. You really feel the chemistry seeping off the page, and also the humour! God, I love when books can balance the romance, the serious and funny all in one. Armas' writing also gives you that belly deep lurch of feeling while reading that forces you have to set the book down to collect yourself for a second before diving back in, see: when Aaron licks the chocolate off of his finger on the plane. I think this is the best feeling to have while reading a romance, that's when you know that it is hitting the mark. I can't wait to see what Elena Armas comes up with next!
