Everything My Mother Taught Me by Alice Hoffman

5.0

A short story. Really good. Characters are all interesting. Adeline is a young girl who loses her father while she is young. Her mom is wild and is known for being with men even though married but now widowed. Sent to a lighthouse to earn money to take care of her. Mom is uncaring but starts to have relations with a married man, Rowan. His wife, Julia becomes friends with Adeline. They find the book that her husband and Adeline's mom writes in about their love affair. Rowan starts beating Julia. They plan for Julia and the son to leave. A reporter comes asking questions about Julia and Rowan gets in trouble for having two wives. Prison. Adeline's mom is fired, and they leave. Adeline runs away to Julia's new place, happy to be away and will finally speak after being mute from dad dying. Awesome writing.
