Rouge is the new(ish) release from Mona Awad, the author of Bunny. Both books feel like falling into a fever dream, with just the right amount of horror and magical realism. Rouge takes a mirror to our deepest insecurities and asks just what we would be willing to let go of in order to be beautiful.
If you have fallen prey to the beauty industry at any point, this book really hits home in a lot of ways - the obsession with perfection and shilling out money for just a bit more, the deep seeded jealousy bred between people over their perceived value, and the fear that you couldn’t possibly be loved for the darkest memories you hold. The commentary to be had as the strange treatments take hold of the MC kept me falling further into the abyss.
I do think there was some meandering that felt unnecessary at times, and I wish there were more of the explicit horror elements weaved throughout the story. Overall, I think of you enjoyed Bunny you would definitely get a lot of the same vibes and experiences through Rouge.
