How to Read Faces by Heather Spears

4.0

It's rare that a poetry anthology takes me as long to read as a novel, but Heather Spears' poems are wrought so finely, with dense detail in the word and syntax choices and images that you can't appreciate them with just a surface reading. Some remained opaque to me even after reading two or three times, but I appreciated their depth and beauty even if I was sometimes confused by things like shifting point of view or uncertainty over the subject of a particular poem.
