Warcross by Marie Lu

5.0

Warcross follows Emika Chen, a 19 year old girl who is doing everything she can to pay her bills and survive. But when a bounty hunting job goes wrong, she's in danger of losing her home. But when she glitches into one of the biggest events on Warcross, she becomes an instant celebrity. The Warcross creator flies her to Tokyo to hire her for a job, while also throwing her into the biggest Warcross competition. Can Emika hack her way into find out who is trying to sabotage the NeuroLink and stop it before it can begin while remaining inconspicuous to her team?

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Warcross. It is the first book I have read by Marie Lu, and I definitely want to check out her other works after having read this one! I personally have a soft spot in my heart for video games and anything that is remotely related, so entering the world of Warcross was a treat. Emika was a believable character, a girl with no family that is doing what she can to survive. I felt like even at the end of the book Emika had things about her that I still didn't know, which I would be excited to see for book 2.

I really didn't care for the relationship between Emika and Hideo, I thought I liked it at first, but then I could tell that something was up based on how he was acting around her, which put me on edge and made me feel like he was playing her. When ultimately, he was. I was also a little on the fence about the ending when Hideo tries to explain to Emika what he has done with the NeuroLink and how she kept going back and forth on what she thought about it. What Hideo was saying didn't need to be reworded by Emika's thoughts to get the meaning of them across, they were kind of already present, so to me that felt a little redundant. But that was something I could easily overlook.

I also wish there had been a little bit more of the actual games of Warcross in the book, since it made it seem like that would be the main point of it with the title and all. Although I guess NeuroLink as a title wouldn't have seemed as inviting and cool. But since it was called Warcross, I just expected it to be more about the actual competition side of things.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the entire journey of Warcross and am excited to see what happens in the next book. Will Emika join Zero and take down Henka Games? Or will she turn over a new leaf with Hideo and go over to his side?
