I went from “oh this is actually good” to “nah this is quite bad actually” to “oh ok this is a debut novel so not bad” to “actually, in hindsight it could have been much better”. Because, you know, reading that synopsis, I was totally expecting some ugly drama to happen, the kind that rich pompous kids sow and reap. But it turns out to be very very VERYYYYYY mild.
But yeah, I get it, it’s a YA novel, of course, mature themes aren’t allowed here, I know all that but still given the premise of the book, it should have still gone ugly at some part. Not just because of what happened in that final mission, but things should have gone bad even in the previous ones. Because what Alice is doing is definitely something that can and will shake the social hierarchy at school or at least ruin the fragile peace in that kind of environment, idk. Some pretty popular kids were involved, after all. But yeah no, nothing happened. On top of that, Alice didn’t pay that much of a big price for the things she had done.

Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate Alice. I think she did well to grab every opportunity to secure her position, even if it meant entering amoral territory. It makes sense, given her inferiority complex and envy of the other students. It’s just that it would have been more interesting if the author shed some light on the lives of the rich kids and showed that they aren’t what they seem they are. But we weren’t given much details about them either.

Romance? Passable. I didn’t get why Henry was head over heels for her since the beginning and I didn’t get the emotional connection between them either (if there was any and God knows how much it’s important for me to like romance) but it was still better than most romances I’ve read so far or seen in the popular books, I guess?

Aside from all this, surprisingly, it was still enjoyable. I finished it faster than usual.
