The Road by Cormac McCarthy
Did not finish book. Stopped at 51%.
From the get go, I really didn't like the writing style and the way the book was structured. I am not sure if it was just the edition I had, but not having any chapters or quotation marks around dialogue was quite bothersome.
The writing is atrocious to me. Run on sentence after run on sentence, this book read in such a tedious way. Dialogue tended to be monosyllabic, making it difficult to read as well. The author just hates punctuation, I guess. Commas are rare and we won't get apostrophe's either, so we are left with a fair amount of "dont." If there's something you don't do when writing, it's that.
I was hoping the plot could carry it for me, but around 50% in, and there was merely a resemblance of one. I was bored, as the story was very repetitive and seemingly pointless. I am sure there is a point, and I'll watch the movie to find that out.
Genuinely one of the worst written books and as a result, it's a huge disappointment. This book is very popular, with lots of readers who seem to love it, and I just don't get why. Easily the worst book I've read so far in 2023.
