“The only real question is, who are the monsters?”
“They ask that question in every monster movie, you know. It’s an actual trope.”
This is my first book by John Scalzi and it was a banger! The humor was on point, I couldn't stop laughing every few chapters because the banter between characters was SO good! Sclazi should for sure try a hand at writing romance, I feel like it would be better than most contemporary romance coming out these days. I couldn't help chipping Jamie and Tom from the start because the vibes were so comfy and heartfelt. The conversations felt so natural and not at all forced or cringe, which is something I was kind of surprised to note given Scalzi is mainly a Sci-Fi writer from what I know.
I loved Jamie and their narration style, any character/book that refers to the Murderbot novellas is instantly my favorite. The way Scalzi made Jamie's gender unspecific was also pretty cool, for some reason I read the character as female, but later switched to a more non-binary person.
The plot was predictable but I enjoyed it still because the writing was so god-tier. I could read about the KPS people just chilling and doing science for 500 pages and I wouldn't be bored at all! It was pretty obvious that the Mega Corp people were the villains with the whole Covid-19 storyline and companies laying people off etc. Reading about the lockdown felt pretty surreal, can't believe it's been 2 years man. The author's note at the end really hit home, and I was able to appreciate the story, even more, considering where it was coming from.
A wild and chaotic romp, The Kaiju Preservation Society is one of the most fun books I've read this year. If you are in the mood for something light and relaxing, this is a perfect read!
