Family Lore by Elizabeth Acevedo

4.0

*originally 4 stars but as time has passed this feels like 4.5 stars*

This is a magical realism story that follows three generations of Marte women, each of whom has a special ability. These abilities are varied and go from the bittersweet (predicting people's deaths) to the bizarre (a magical vagina), and it's delightful to slowly learn about each woman's ability and the impacts that they have on their lives. Also, the writing in this was beautiful, while it's not written in verse, it has a touch of poetic writing which I appreciated.

Acevedo managed to depict characters who are flawed and sometimes unlikable, but with so much depth and complexity that it's possible to understand where they are coming from and root for them. This book does an incredible job of exploring sisterhood and mother-daughter relationships. It was interesting to see how sisters raised by the same parents in the same house had widely different experiences growing up and how that ended up shaping their lives to be different and it also impacted their relationships with each other. Beyond that, it also does a good job of exploring different types of romantic relationships, some of which are heartbreaking to witness, some that are so complicated and haunting, some that have passed the test of time, and some that are strong despite the obstacles in their way. All of those relationships between sisters, parents, and partners are the heart of this book and what makes it so special.
