I picked up this book after the book Transgender History talked a bit about Lou Sullivan, it made me curious to learn more about him and this book was a wonderful way to do so.
This book starts very early in Lou's life when he's just a teen all the way to his death. And it was beautiful to see him develop into an adult and live his life. His transition journey was full of so much struggles and I really related to that. Seeing someone else go through that in such a way really felt like I had community in my trans elders.
Lou is also just a very funny person. I laughed a lot reading this book and genuinely had a lot of fun. Lou has a way of enjoying so much in his life and making jokes about the good and the bad. It makes these diaries a mostly fun thing to read and it made me able to understand how he looked at life.
Lastly Lou is very open about his sexual life and I think it was just great to see someone enjoying themselves like that. Just to see someone sharing their life with others and having a good time is something I appreciated a lot in him.
Concluding this book made me feel connected in a way I didn't expect beforehand and I would very much recommend others reading this if they're interested in his life.
