The Descendants by Robert Chursinoff
Did not finish book. Stopped at 19%.
DNF about 60 pages in. This is kind of a family drama set in and around a Doukhobor community in the BC interior. It wasn't really catching my interest, and the main characters were kind of extra in a "this is definitely a first novel" and "definetely by a cis guy who has a lot of feelings about Real Men" kind of way. Also a couple really glaring editing errors.
(Also, and this is slightly unfair as I didn't read the whole book, and maybe it would've been addressed later in, though I didn't see it when I skimmed the history sections: the book talks about the Canadian government taking land from the First Nations to give to the Doukhobors, but very much leaves out how the early Doukhobor settlers were so actively hostile to the Indigenous people trying to share the land that they were driven out. Including driving several Sinixt families right out of the country.)
