The Iron King by Julie Kagawa

2.0

I have to say that I very nearly DNF'd this book. It irritated me quite a bit but I just wanted to finish it so I did.

So, the main reason why this book annoyed me was that it seemed to want you to suspend your disbelief of certain things, to accept that things happen "just cause". A deus ex machina, if you will, that this person is powerful because I said so and this happens because I said so rather than having an actual explanation for things. For example, the magic system seemed to have no explanation at all, or very little, and it irked me. Furthermore, this book also seemed to expect you to have certain knowledge about things that people might not have. There were characters in it from A Midsummer Night's Dream, and although I did know some things about these characters, it annoyed me that it was essentially vital to the story that we know about these characters. Finally, it annoyed me that there was so much description of various creatures but again no explanation of their magical powers, and there were so many creatures that honestly by the end I was just mainly reading the dialogue because I just didn't care, so it is very unlikely that I'll read the next book unless I have not a lot else to read. 2.5 stars.
