Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough

Insidious + Gone Girl. That's the whole book in a nutshell.

If I could summarize my whole feelings toward this book, I would say I was ready to love it because of the set-up. I really like domestic thrillers (cheating husband, damaged wife, wife and mistress confrontations—YASSS! give that to me. I will eat that shit up!). But I guess in an attempt to make it more flavorful, deviating from the usual formula, the author decided to include a supernatural element to the plot point (
which is astral projection
). And that added element somehow ruined my entire reading experience.

The beginning was strong, really loved the cunning thinking of Adele and Louise naivete. The middle dragged a bit, and it became more formulaic. Then near the end, it was revealed who the real sick person was, the one who's manipulating the entire game, and I was ready to ride along. Psychological thrillers promise one thing: use mental illness as the hidden plot twist.

BUT when I reached the last few pages, I tumbled down. I lost it. I felt betrayed. It was bogus and really broke all the build-up and dread from the start. It was the randomness of the twist that actually irked me. There's no way that you could have guessed that exactly because of how random it was. I was like, what's the purpose of being in this character's head all the time? The purpose is merely for shock factor, that's it. Which somehow makes the book cheap. Same feels when I read Verity by Colleen Hoover.
