“...first the smiles, then the lies. Last comes gunfire.”
•
Buckle up for another long and completely biased praise-a-thon where I give yet another Dark Tower novel ALL THE STARS!
•
What I wanted, as soon as I cracked open this book on my second trip to the tower, were the wolves. It’s been so many years since I read this series for the first time that I can only remember bits and pieces of what I loved from each book, and what I remembered best from this one was the battle with the wolves.
•
Well, we can’t always get what we want. But if the King is writing, we’ll get what we need, say thankee sai.
•
What did we need? Well, first to reconnect with our ka tet. Roland, Eddie, Susannah, Jake, and Oy left the land of Oz (or something like it) behind and are back on the path of the beam. Along the way is Calla Bryn Sturgis, a small farm town with one resident Constant Readers will recognize, and one big problem. Big big.
•
Even though the entire time I was reading this a small part of my brain was saying, “Bring on the wolves!”, the lengthy delay heightened the anticipation in the best way. I absolutely loved catching up with our old friend and hearing the backstory from when we’d seen him last. The tale of the wolves and the roont children was fascinating and the legend of Lady Oriza had me ready to start hurling dinner plates. Riza!
•
After all the catching up with our old friend and getting to know all our new ones, not to mention trying to solve a problem back in New York and figure out what the heck is going on with Susannah, he brings on the wolves...and they do NOT disappoint. I could literally read about Roland leading gunslingers in battle all day, if it please ya.

This was the first Dark Tower novel King wrote after he was hit by a van while walking and you can tell he’s done playing around. Once again, I’m living in this world, speaking its language, and loving every minute. I say true.

“And the shooting will happen so fast and be over so quick that you’ll wonder what all the planning and palaver was for, when in the end it always comes down to the same five minutes’ worth of blood, pain, and stupidity.”
