I got Pyramidia by Stephanie Sanders-Jacob at the first Queer Your Horror Bookshelf event and started reading it on my recent plane ride and finished it now on the beach. It's an easy to read, entertaining satirical horror about a lonely and depressed teacher who gets entangled in a pyramid scheme. The idea of a pyramid scheme horror hooked me in instantly, and it was fun to follow the main character's increasingly weird situations. At times the book felt claustrophobic, but it never fully committed to bringing on true discomfort. I saw this promoted as a cozy horror so that's probably a feature, not a bug, but while I was entertained I was left a bit hoping for more. Especially with the character's relationships, some of which felt rushed toward the end.
In a way, this book reminded me a lot of A House with Good Bones, only it had more plot. But that kind of atmosphere and a comedic small town horror with eccentric characters that sometimes gets dark, but mostly pulls fast from it. So if you like this kind of more relaxing horror and are searching for a fast beach read, check this out, and be careful of teas with proprietary blend of botanicals gifted to you by strange ladies.
Also, Serenitea is an amazing name, love it. 🍵
