The Fire Never Goes Out: A Memoir in Pictures by ND Stevenson

3.0

Something felt off about this book. It wasn't the content itself - I'm always down for a queer illustrated memoir and I've been following Noelle Stevenson since before the Lumberjanes days - but instead in the way that text and images were combined and presented. It wasn't always clear whether these were old entries being added on for context or if Noelle was looking back on what she experienced. This soured the experience a tiny bit for me. Her comics on their own are bravely honest and deserve five stars - I just feel like the editor/publisher slacked a bit. (Same thing goes for the dust jacket, which feels quite cheap in comparison to the actual book covers it protects. Also: a few images were not in high resolution, which feels like a hasty mistake on the production side.) Nonetheless: these are minor gripes and do not reflect on the actual content of the book, which definitely gets four stars from me.
