Fame: A Novel in Nine Episodes by Daniel Kehlmann

5.0

Like Black Mirror? You'll love Fame!

I had previously read two of these stories -- "Rosalie Goes Off to Die" and "The Way Out" -- in a German course in college and was totally blown away. The first, narrated from the omniscient perspective of the story's author, is a mind boggling and affecting meditation on aging, mortality, theism, and authorship. In the latter, jaded action star Ralf Tanner takes a break from his responsibilities only to find himself evicted from his own identity by a professional impersonator.

The other seven interlocking episodes of Fame were just as engrossing and vibrant as the ones I had already read. Similar to his recent novella You Should Have Left Kehlmann uses Doppelgänger and doubling to great effect. Here, his characters' sanity slowly unravels at the hands of mobile technology and the social pressures that attend the desire for and possession of celebrity.
