Anything with Simon and the gang and you got me invested. I know Wayward Son always gets the most shit from people but honestly it's done so well. It shows the after effect of fighting in a war. Seeing what it takes out of the people involved.
I really love how we see both Simon and Baz struggle with their relationship. They rushed into it from secretly pining/hating each other to a relationship while having so many personal battles going on at the same time. They never had the chance to sit down and talk, to figure out where they stand, what they are and how to deal with everything. So it makes sense that after the honeymoon stage things felt off between them. And it was shown so clearly by constantly showing them doubt each other's feelings.
While I do hate how Penny was written at times, like her friendship with Simon and the way her whole relationship with Micah was handled. Like she Rainbow wanted to break them up there could have been so many better ways to do that, but she did my girl Penny dirty. I do think it was done so well to show how her friendship with Baz has grown. How they have grown to both admire and trust each other. They both only want to protect their friends and loved ones and they both strive to be the best. Their friendship is just so special and it warms my heart to see that we got more of it. It was in the little moments you saw that they truly looked out for one another in any way they could because Simon is the most important person in both their lives.
But aside from that, there wasn't much. I get that this is the in-between book, that this was about the characters trying to discover themselves. Yet there was no actual plot for most of the book. That it was just a road trip. OH MY GOD, IT WAS ESSENTIAL A FANFIC. Giving the fans what they want with some angst included (making sure the angst and fluff were key things tag in this). I have nothing against a fluffy road trip story but it seemed like everything that happened was just to lead up in a bad way to what's going on in awtwb. Could have done it a bit better and not seemed as rushed as it was. As I felt like the fights were super short and everything except what was going on in Nebraska was glossed over. Which honestly says a lot ππ but regardless Simon and Baz (AND PENNY) have such a hold over me I could care less and it still gets 5 starsππ
