Annie's Life In Lists by Kristin Mahoney
4.0
Annie is a girl who is struggling to fit in and keep her life in order after her family moves from her big house in the city to a small town. She was never great at making friends, and only has one she really trusts, but now she has to make new ones. Among other things:
she is incredibly shy
She has a almost photographic memory and remembers things she shouldn’t which often gets her in trouble
she has to find her way around a new school and get to know new classmates
She has a brother who is mad at her because he blames her for them having to move
She loves making lists
From debut author Kristin Mahoney comes a book about a girl who is just trying to keep her life in order. This a great kids read for any kid dealing with new circumstances in life whether it’s a new school or a new place to live. Annie is an incredibly relatable character and I really enjoyed getting to get to know her. This book chronicle’s Annie’s life over a year and all the things that can happen in such a short amount of time. The format of the book, its written completely in lists, makes it’s a easy read for those learning to read or those that have short attention spans. Although the book is written completely in lists which can tend to be choppy, I didn’t see that with this book. I still felt the overall story flowed nicely. I thought the way the main character summarized her experiences and her descriptions were well done. Annie’s character develops nicely through the book but although there is secondary characters in the book, their characters do not, I feel, develop strongly enough. They really take a back seat to Annie’s character. That being said the story is a sweet story and accurately portrays the normal experience of a normal girl just growing up.
I love this book and all that it offers. I look forward to more from this author. If you haven’t yet order it for your library both personal or professional. It’s a must have for all children’s book collections! It comes out May 29. So put your copy on order today!
Thank you to the publishers Random House and Alfred A Knopf Books for Young Readers for an ARC of this book in exchange for a review!
