Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer

5.0

ANNIHILATION doesn't deliver on a lot of answers. I think it leaves me asking five times more questions than when I started. It's a massive acid twist ride without a seat belt or promethazine that stabs me and leaves a gaping wound deeper than the tower in this book.

That's actually an endorsement for what Jeff's written here. It's good. Think "2001: A Space Odyssey" but earthbound (maybe). He kept me turning the page, and I felt more frenzied about finishing it the deeper I got into it. He writes it well, and what makes this twisted sci-fi tale work is the heaving dose of humanity supplied by the main character.

I will definitely be reading the next two books. I can't say the first book leaves me expecting an ultimate end that supplies any more answers than book one provides, but I'm okay with that. What I won't do is jump straight into the next book. This ride exhausted me, so I'll need a short break (very short) with some other books between. I won't be surprised if I end up reading the second and third book consecutively, though.
