This game show romcom seems straight from the screen, which shouldn’t be a surprise considering it was co-written by television and film creators! Bestseller Elana Armas was joined by writer/directors Hillary Nussbaum and Heather Taylor. I’m such an audiophile, I was so stoked to join this audiobook tour, but it was made even more exciting by the fact it stars Mary Mouser (of Cobra Kai) and Tyler Posey (of Teen Wolf)--and they are joined by a full cast of actors and actresses (so many from shows I love!).
This audiobook was done in the style of immersive audio with background setting ambiance and sound effects. Personally, I don’t listen to a lot of audiobooks in that style, so it does take a bit of getting used to–but it does lend this book to being even more cinematic. The plot is such a classic romcom with fake dating (fake marriage in this case!) and two love interests who have immediate, sizzling chemistry. Cleo and Javi’s openness and honesty with each other (despite faking a marriage to the world) make them two of the most earnest LIs I’ve ever read. I absolutely loved that about them! As they learned about each other naturally and then at speed for the game show and went on dates to stage relationship photos, I fell in love with them as they fell in love with each other.
This was a five star romcom for me and I highly recommend it!
Here are my favorite quotes from Know Your Newlywed:
“‘I don't care what other people think. I do care about me, and I do care about you. I care that we know what's real and what's pretend. That the lines aren't blurring. That we stay honest with each other.’”
“‘Honey, don’t use my past as a blueprint for your future.’”
“‘It’ll be a big romantic gesture, just like in the movies!’
‘A lot of those gestures would actually be creepy in real life, mom.’
‘Not this one.’”
“‘Call it fate then. You’re taking an opportunity given to you and to assist the dreams of the person you love. Why can’t that be a good thing?’”
“‘I’m up for anything, as long as I get to be with you.’”
