Home Before Dark by Riley Sager

5.0

I rate this book a 4.75 out of 5.

I don’t usually read horror/spooky books because I am a scaredy cat but I heard good things about this one and I wanted to give it a try since I really liked The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones. And let me tell you, I am glad that I did.

I was really hooked from the beginning and I love the way the story was told from Maggie’s perspective and then we are also reading the “House of Horrors” book that her father wrote in his POV. I loved the parallels that were happening between the two POVs and how each supported the other.

The “House of Horrors” POV gave the spooky/horror vibes while Maggie’s POV gave the thriller vibes and I thought they really blended well together. It wasn’t too scary which is good for me since my scare tolerance is very low.

I loved how the story unfolded and Riley Sagar really knows how to be suspenseful in his writing. The language he used and the way he wrote the scenes, really kept me on the edge of my seat and I really couldn’t put the book down. I will be going back and reading his other works as well because I need more. These types of thrillers I can rock with.

I took off .25 stars because the ending felt kind of convenient and I would’ve rather it stayed the way it was going.

In all, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a ghost story/thriller that’s kinda creepy but is also a mystery. I also recommend this for scaredy cats like me who want to start reading horror/thrillers but need a light one.
