After 30 years of feeling like an alien, I’m seeking a diagnosis of autism (and ADHD). My mom admits she was worried about me as a child, but she doesn’t like me talking about all this because she feels like she failed as a parent.
After reading this book, I can understand why. The history and lingering stigma, especially the early beliefs that autism was caused by cold and domineering mothers, really explains why she never had me assessed for anything.
This book covers it all, fulfilling my need for information and context, while also affirming my belief that I am on the spectrum. For such a lengthy book, it is engaging and interesting throughout, sharing the big picture at any one point in time, coupled with illustrative examples of individuals throughout history.
Highly recommended!
