I Call Him "Mr. President": Stories of Golf, Fishing, and Life with My Friend George H. W. Bush by Ken Raynor

5.0

I absolutely loved this book. I don't know anything about golf, but this is less about golf and more about a small town golf pro's long relationship with President and Barbara Bush, their children and grandchildren. Raynor's career as Cape Arundel pro follows the Bushs' career in DC yet they returned to Maine at least once or more per year and summered there following his defeat to President Clinton.

This is a collection of Raynor's memories and stories from those they played with over time, from Jim Nantz, Greg Norman and Roger Clemens to Bush family members and neighbors of the Raynor and Bush families. It's part golf stories and part life lessons, such as Bush telling Norman he should respect the office of the President & play golf with Clinton, although Norman wasn't a fan - and ended in Norman admitting a friendship with Clinton.

Stories away from their Maine golf course include the Raynor family overnighting with the Bush family at the VP residency at the Naval Observatory when they couldn't find a hotel room during their honeymoon and at the White House en route to their winter workplace in Florida. The relationship between these two men who couldn't be more different in their upbringing is beautiful - as is the reason behind the book's title: why the author never calls him George but lovingly refers to her as "Bar".

An excellent read.
