Bought it for the cover.
•
Flawed, brave, real girls fighting for survival on an island 40 miles offshore of Maine. Their all girls school was quarantined after the girls succumb to mysterious “illness” ,referred to as the Tox, killed about half of them and left the remaining girls infected and dealing with horrific and painful symptoms and side effects.

“They Told us to wait and stay alive”.
•
So they wait hopefully and stay alive, cut off from the rest of the world. They are left to fend for themselves, forbidden to leave the confines of their school grounds unless they are part of the boat shift tasked with trekking 5 miles across the island infested with strange and dangerous creatures to collect supplies and food dropped off by the Navy.
•
The story focuses on a trio of best friends, Hettie, Byatt and Reese. When Byatt goes missing Hettie is determined to find her even if it means leaving the school grounds to brave the horrors that lie beyond it. When she does, what she learns is more terrifying, in some ways, than the Tox itself.

Rory Powers has created a world filled with horror, an amazing cast of characters and an amazing story!
•
Strong themes of friendship, loyalty and love in a feminist, science fiction LBGTQ story. An entire cast of female characters saving their world!
