From the Ashes: My Story of Being Métis, Homeless, and Finding My Way by Jesse Thistle
5.0
Wow! I’m not even sure how to describe my thoughts on this memoir, but I’ll try.
In this memoir, Jesse tells his story of growing up in poverty, neglect, abuse and his early adult years filled with addiction and homelessness. Now, Jesse is a professor at York University in Toronto.
This is such an incredible memoir and covers a wide variety of themes and topics. Jesse talks about his struggles with addiction. He talks about family, belonging, and finding love. He talks about redemption. He talks about learning and embracing his Métis-Cree heritage.
I cried several times throughout this book. Jesse’s story is heart-breaking in many instances, but it’s also a story of redemption and resilience.
If you are looking for a non-fiction book for #nonfictionnovember (or any time of year), let it be this one!
