Game Changer by Neal Shusterman
5.0
Read this strictly for the Author and was not disappointed. Without giving away too much, Game Changer is about a hs football player who finds that everytime he gets hit on the field, the whole world shifts just a bit. The main point of the book is seeing through your privilege. You think you'd make certain decisions if you were in someone else's shoes, but really you might see how hard it is to be like that person. You might change your opinions if you had to keep secrets, suppress your feelings, or placate people just to keep yourself safe.
I was initially unsure if I'd connect with the main character (Cis/het/white/hs bro) but I found him more relatable as he was forced outside of his comfort zone to really confront choices he made or could have made in a different life. A quick but thought-provoking read that touches on some hard subjects, including white privilege, systemic racism, segregation, economic disparity, drug usage, lgbtq issues, abusive relationships, and toxic family. Perfect read for anyone 13+
