WOW this book was incredible! This is one of my favorite kinds of books: one in which a learn a lot about a place in the world that I know very little AND hooks me in with an absolutely gripping story. This book had me gasping out loud at the reveals and sighing in appreciation at the imagery and philosophy. The characters, both living and dead, all felt so real and at no point could I guess what would happen next. I particularly enjoyed the choice to have the book be narrated in the second person because it made Maali's feelings of frustration and helplessness at his circumstances so much more visceral to be told as if I were the one experiencing it. So so glad to have read this!
