Miley’s dream of making it to the Olympics has her working a summer job at a remote mountain retreat. In her spare time, she trains by running in the beautiful but vast Frank Church Wilderness. Her summer plan is blown to smithereens when she is abducted during one of her runs by two men and held captive in a desolate off grid cabin where she bides her time formulating a way to escape.
This book started off strong, and I was immediately hooked. I was even more invested when I realised this is loosely based on/inspired by the real-life events of what happened to Kari Swenson in the 1980s.
Miley, the fmc, is stubborn and resilient, and although in the long run, those personality traits serve her well, they definitely contribute to the situation she finds herself in in the first place... I know as women we want the freedom to run, etc, wherever and whenever we want without risk, but that doesn't make it reality, and going off without anyone knowing where you're going blows my mind. Brent, who is Mileys best friend, Olympic teammate & potential love interest, is the other POV we get this story told through, and I loved his unwavering belief and determination to find Miley and bring her home. This man takes off into the wilderness with basic rations a hope and prayer and refuses to give up on the woman he loves. Without giving too much away I will say that I was invested throughout, however, this wasn't the page turner I thought it would be, the pacing was a little inconsistent and the ending was rushed and considering everything we see Miley go through in this book I wanted more from the resolution than we got. There is definitely sensitive subject matter covered, so check content and TWs if necessary. This was my first book by this author, and I will definitely be reading more from her in the future.
