Last Days by Brian Evenson

5.0

Brian Evenson is now a glaring red dot on my radar. This was expertly written and I found myself asking “why aren’t more people talking about this!?” I’ve had a lot of great reads already in 2024, but this one almost takes the cake!

Last Days was deliciously dark, grotesque and hilarious. I found myself grimacing as well as laughing out loud. The Paul’s? Fucking hilarious - just brilliantly simple and perfect. I seriously would love to sit down with Evenson and just hear him talk about this story. Last Days bumped its way up into my top 5 favorites of all time. It just really hit all the marks for me. All the characters were so complimentary of one another and it had just enough gore and extremism to tickle my horror girlie fancy. I did a combination of audio and physical reading of this and the audiobook just really adds so much to the story. Brilliantly done.

The only thing I absolutely DESPISED was that horrendous introduction. I felt like I was reading some pretentious professor’s overly wordy, absolutely unnecessary take on someone else’s writing and it did nothing to enhance the story for me. If anything it took away and was a poor way to introduce such a brilliant story. Won’t be deducting anything from my review of the novel itself since this really had nothing to do with the story.

One zillion out of 5. Read this!!!!!!!
