I am going to have to eat some crow on this one. A friend that I'm in a book club with has been pushing for this book for a while now. I did not like the sound of it and we have disagreed on the more sci-fi end of what we like in the past. I caved, we picked it for book club, and I freaking loved it!
I would compare it to Project Hail Mary and MurderBot. Bob's humor and personality floating somewhere in between the two main narrators of these series. The science isn't too heavy to bog you down. It plays that game of making nerd references without that being the whole book (I'm looking at you Ready Player One). I will definitely be burning through this series in the very near future.
Also, I think this will be a really interesting book for a book club conversation. Lots of meaty debate topics (I won't get into them as they would be spoiler filled) in the philosophical and anthropological realms.
Two negatives first, very minor, the audiobook narrator does not have a good Homer Simpson impression. Second, the first book doesn't have a great ending. It definitely feels like a chapter end that needs the next book.
