This has ben a very, VERY enjoyable read!
The plot was quite slow, most of the key info being revealed and explanations happening towards the end. But it was well compensated by the characters who were well written, especially Noemi. She's very interesting, she had her flaws and her strengths that made likeable. She's extroverted, someone who likes parties and music, she plays with people and wants people to like her. So much that she blames whenever she sees the slightest hint of fatigue or discomfort in other people's face.
All those times she felt bad when Virgil or any other member of the house appeared tired and she felt like she overdid it, when those bastards were treating her and her cousin like trash.
But she's smart and knows to hold her ground.
What really helped to make the first half interesting, other than her investigating the strange events and asking for stories around in the town, was her relationship with Francis. Francis was introduced as the timid guy far from her ideal type, that she'd often compare to her previous conquests. But as they interacted, we get to see more facets of him that that filled his canvas with soft colours and pretty flowers. While she felt safe in his presence and had new feelings she's never felt before blooming in her heart, to him she was like music that helped him snap out of the macabre haze that shackled him to his family and their eerie silent house.
The villains were well written, and by that I mean I hated their guts!!!
Florence, who has the appearance of a typical strict victorian teacher, with her hair neatly tied in a bun, wearing gray colors and a constipated expression, with her holier than thou attitude to top it all. When all this time she assisted that old slug all this time, feeding him victims when she was a victim herself . And Virgil, I didn't like from the start and I was right. But somehow, other than being a dangerous creep, his ambitions felt less important.
The inclusion of white superiority complex and their stupid eugenics theory to all the abominable crimes committed By Howard Doyle was well done, emphasizing further his sick nature. All the details and descriptions surrounding him were so disgusting, enough to make you want to puke your breakfast.
I just wished the struggle to take down the villain was a bit longer. The protagonists came up with one plan, which was half ruined but they quickly found another solution. It would have been nice to see Howard like the big villain in all his vomit inducing splendour but he was defeated too easily in my opinion, compared to all that he did in the past.
