A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin
2.5
A beautifully written fantasy classic that unfortunately falls victim to the test of time.
Important in its popularity of “wizarding schools,” A Wizard Of EarthSea is over ambitious in its delivery, condensing a large, epic tale into a short story. While the author’s prose is beautiful and flowy, it has the propensity to wander, making it hard to follow on audio at times.
Most intriguing is it’s magic system, which unfortunately proved to be more confusing and underdeveloped as the narrative goes on.
A fantasy classic, but not necessarily a fantasy “must-read”. It’s contributions to modern day fantasy can be appreciated, but modern day fantasy readers may not be enthralled by what it has to offer.
