To anyone in the know, the Metland Egg - a pure red egg - is a wonder. Though many collectors have heard of it, few have ever seen it. And the rumours surrounding its collection mean that it has acquired mythical status. Since the 1920s there has been talk of its existence, and the mysterious death of the man who claims to have collected thirty such eggs.
In the present day, the small scarlet egg found amongst his father’s possessions means little to Nick. Selling it on eBay offers a chance to get a step closer to owning the one thing he covets…a gaming chair. However, not long after someone expresses an interest in buying it Nick and his mother are robbed by balaclava-wearing men determined to take the egg. Without realising it, Nick has stumbled upon the highly lucrative world of egg trafficking.
Focusing on two different timelines we get to see the emergence of this story and the consequences it has many years on. A grand tale of obsession this was riveting. Each of the characters we encounter was fascinating and the way the storylines merged as we start to piece together the mystery was absorbing. Highly recommended.
