This was incredible. Winn makes the battles of World War I feel real and immediate. The characters are well-drawn and distinct from one other, and I felt invested in their relationships. There's a thread of dark humor that leavens some of the violence and destruction without seeming to take it too lightly. I was so impressed with Winn's control of her material, especially considering that this is her first novel. Highly recommended.
