Horowitz is the only author authorized to write about Holmes by the Conan Doyle Estate, and he does it so. dang. well! MORIARTY oozes grimy 1890s London atmosphere and gives us all the classic Sherlockian tricks - from looking at someone and telling their whole life story from the details of their clothing, to over the top disguises and convoluted schemes - despite the lack of the actual presence of Holmes and Watson. In their stead, we follow NY detective Frederick Chase and Scotland Yard Inspector Athelney Jones as they traverse the poisonous power vacuum that Moriarty's death has created for London's criminal underworld.

MORIARTY has so many fantastic references to Conan Doyle's Holmes, while still featuring Horowitz's signature flair. And the twist that this book takes is one of my favorites of all time! This was actually a reread for me, and despite knowing how it would go, I was still 100% engrossed.
