The Vegetarian by Han Kang
3.0
The vegetarian is the story of a South Korean homemaker Yeong-hye who decides to give up meat after she has a nightmare. It shows the consequences of giving up meat in a place like Korea where being a vegetarian is not something that people can comprehend very easily.
More than that it's about conformity and how societies like ours dislike anything or anyone who does not follow the rules or fit into boxes. The book is divided into three parts and is in the point of view of three people; Yeong-hye's husband, her brother-in-law and her sister In-hye. It sheds light on the violence that goes on behind these seemingly peaceful households triggered by any action that might seem a little different from the norm.
It was a very different book to read and I did enjoy it. It's a very short read and it definitely does make you think about the life of women in the society.
