Work Pray Code: When Work Becomes Religion in Silicon Valley by Carolyn Chen
4.0
Intriguing examination of Silicon Valley work from the lens of religion. I don’t think the central thesis of work as religion holds up - there have been plenty of historical examples of all-consuming labor outside of the knowledge work of Silicon Valley that haven’t seemed to be associated with a decline in religiosity, and there isn’t a clear explanation in this book for the differences between those other movements and this one. Still, an intriguing take on current trends and I appreciate that it does provide a unifying framework for understanding the subversive nature of “wellness” as offered by employers.
