Dogs and Monsters: Stories by Mark Haddon

4.0

I was a bit confused about the premise of this collection: not EVERY story here is based on mythology, though many of them are and in my opinion those are the strongest stories here. The opening short story The Mother's Story - a take on the Minotaur as told by his mother - and the penultimate story The Quiet Limit of the World - a tale of Dawn in love with a mortal who she begs the gift of immortality for - are incredible. Fresh and clever, Mother's Story especially is like looking at the familiar story and figures through a kalidescope.

The other stories here are solid, but like every collection, not every story hits as hard for every person!
